Not a fake, plated. I have one from 1958. Somewhere :icon_scratch:
It is weakly magnetic and noticeably heavier

Plated makes more sense - not sure what you mean by " set in like a nickel but a lot more depth " pic is the only way forward here .

Looks like someone made a necklace out of it.

I agree, probably was on a chain and broke off. The ring around the penny is probably the only part attracted to the magnet.
