Dug this deep in decent shape and the pictures don't do it justice. It's pre 1881 because the name had changed slightly after and included the word "royal" which this doesn't have. I did some research and the regiment was only stationed here once for a very short period of time. In 1751, after various name changes, the regiment was titled the 4th (King's Own) Regiment of Foot. The regiment retained this title until the Childers Reforms of 1881. It is a very large button also.

I have a site that gave up 4 of those. (I dug 2 of them) I'd like to find an early one.

You have it a little wrong. Your button was the 1881 issue, then soon after that it was changed to read The King's Own Royal Regiment. Pre 1881 uses the roman numerals IV.

And can afford to buy some of them, like me! Lots are not cheap.

The funny part is I've spent/wasted money on lots of other things, and the only thing to increase in value is a few of my books. Fortunately I have most of the bases covered that I need covered and now it's just buying a book every now and again. I'm actually very due to buy a few.
