Looks like an older dead bolt type of door latch, hole for the chain the insert, nub for excess chain to attach to and the nail holes. But I don't know, just the first thing that came to mind

Hmm that's interesting. Does it look gilded? And to what would the last most likely be out on. It would have been on the side of the house.
