I never thought I'd beat the 1784 half real I found in January, but I did it today! I found one from 1776! How cool is that date for a coin? It's pretty worn, but at least it hasn't been holed (like my 1784). It appears to have a Mexico mint mark (M with a small "o" above it), but I'm not 100% positive.

The coin was only about four inches down and came up as a dime on my Ace 250. Not a great signal, but I dig everything at this site. Lots of junk there, but there's also some old stuff mixed in as well.

Thanks for all the great replies! Finding a coin from 1776 seems so amazing to me. Such a significant date in U.S. history. It could have been used by Nathanael Greene, Paul Revere or even Benedict Arnold! Doubtful, but you never know...

That is a great find! Anything with that important historical date on it is awesome. Anything that was around as our ancestors were fighting for there freedom and paving the way for us to have our independence, especially silver. Nice find Tim

Congratulations on a great find , I have found a couple of them and some cobs but that was in mexico. Dont think i'll find anything like that in California.
