Also like to mention the wheat is a 1909 S mint mark and the nickel is unidentifiable.

After looking with a jewelers lens, I don't see a vbd stamp on the back. Any ideas on rarity?

The mintage for a 1909 S was 1,825,000, which is a VERY low mintage. Looks like they are selling in the $50 to $75 range on eBay in worn condition. Great find!

Thanks for the bigger pics, I must be getting old cause I styill can't make out what type of button. Maybe a North Carolina?? Have you tried to gently scrape at it with a toothpick/toothbrush and water?

Cannonball guy IDd the buttom yesterday. It's a SC palmetto tree on the front. I don't know buttons, but the button guys seemed really impressed.

"The waters fine".... I get it a Susan Smith reference. You have a dark sense of humor. I like it!

It is a South Carolina State Militia button. The backmark saying "Schuyler H&G N-York, written in RAISED lettering, means it was manufactured sometime between the Schuyler, Hartley & Graham firm's founding in 1854 and December 1860, when South Carolina seceded from the Federal Union.

Hope this helps. I have tried gently cleaning it with a toothbrush and sadly, the majority of detail is gone. Thankfully the backing and shank are in surprisingly good shape
