looking at the pic, I'm not convinced it says 'w' and 'st'..... of course you're seeing it in person, and I'm only looking at a pic. to me it looks like some sort of civil war era ID that a soldier might have on him so he can be identified if killed

I can't see a W clearly or ST either but a Google search with Sheppard Knap 32 56 NY shows 32 W 56th st NY as home address for Sheppard Knap and Sheppard Knapp Jr. I try to clean it with some olive oil to see if I can make out letters better.
