I want to start by thanking Austin McCullough for his hosting me and Russ yesterday in Charleston...we hunted a spot of his and one of ours and came away with some real goodies...I'll take quality over quantity ANY day. So, I'll get right to it!

We were about to head out, Austin had already gone to the car and me and Russ were not far behind him...got one last choppy signal under a root. After digging around for a minute or two, I finally got the target out of the ground...my first reaction was all that work for a piece of scrap brass...picked it up and saw the hole, then the stamped number on the bottom and I KNEW EXACTLY what I had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1847 Charleston Slave Tag. Occupation: Porter

Also got a me a nice British Half Cent from the site as well....

WOW!!! What an incredible hunt! Congrats big time on such an crazy piece of history, and to be the first person to hold that probably since the person who wore it, incredible. Kudos on not messing it up at all digging it from under a root too. The rest of your finds there are amazing too!

That slave tag is telling. An incredible find. they had a similar system of registry for blacks on Miami Beach until at least ww2. Blacks were not allowed on the island unless they were employed there. The employer would get them a license, and the black worker had to present the license to get on the island. I wonder if they were required to wear it when in public.

Thanks Fletch I lost touch with the values they dont come up often

That's just what I had a MD dealer in tell me. I've never seen one in person much less found one to be able to sell. Don't know, just wanted to throw it out there in case he does decide to sell it.
