Had to get out today after a stressful week.... Called my buddy and we decided hit the old dump site again. First hit about 15 min into the hunt after kicking a tumble weed came out a high tone but low VDI at 63 with the AT Gold. I was a lil confused that the numbers didn't match the tone. I'm glad i dug it up cause it turned out to be a silver buckle with a "J" inscribed. Continued the hunt and found another eagle button. Never fails that we find one or two. My buddy had better luck and found a US collar pin and a post 1923 lapel infantry pin. He also found silver with a seahorse earring. It started to get late so i decided to keep the coil to the ground on my way back to the truck and then i got a chopping signal with a VDI of 78-84 about 2" down. I started digging immediately notice a well detailed face on a coin. A closer look revealed it was a penny to my surprise. Then i looked at the date, 1996 D. Wow, I felt the excitement leave my body. But something else caught my eye, this coin was larger than your average penny, closer to a nickel size, not only that but the picture of Lincoln was larger and pretty detailed. Can anyone tell me if an error coin like this is worth anything? Thank you, Texas Yankee Wired Penny

some more cool finds. That is a weird penny. I'm curious to see what it turns out to be.

Lol, thanks! I find it a little weird that its bigger than the average penny. It also shaped like a bowl. Don't know if it was a nickel base used on the penny but Lincoln's face is slight larger.

Yes..very weird..and interesting! I did notice that not only is the coin physically larger than normal, the lettering and illustrations are to scale with it...being larger too. If you find anything more about this...please keep us posted ! Cool find..thanks for sharing..ddf

I agree with it probably being light heat damage. probably caused the zinc core to expand slightly

I could be wrong, because I usually am, but I thought there was a coin posted on here in the last year that was abnormally large but can't remember if it was a penny or nickel. I do remember it being clad though.

It is heat damage, heated until the zinc almost melts the coin kind of spreads out. I've done it myself to test it.

Cleaned up the belt buckle as best as I could. The back is inscribed with the makers mark of (HIGKOK) and sterling underneath. Buckle dates back to the 1900's

Looking at your picture of the edge, I can tell you that is a "railroad rim", or to use proper terms, a "partial collar" error. It happens when they incorrectly install the dies which strike the coins. In good condition (aka not dug) they are usually worth $1-10, depending on the date. In that condition, it would be hard to sell it for $1. Still neat to find, though.

May have been heated and caused it to expand, and changed the VDI response as well.... interesting indeed...
