Got out to a newly discovered colonial plantation. The plantation dates back to the late 1600s and I believe was abandoned or burned in the 1800s. Anyways I had found some revolutionary war era buttons and a piece of a trunk plate along with a musket ball. I went out today after the rain and dug a bunch of iron until I decided it was time to leave. I was swinging desperately on my way back to the car when I got a nice signal that definitely was not iron. I popped the plug and saw a big disc staring at me. I picked it up and brushed the dirt off. I saw the back of this beautiful coin and started yelling and punching the air. I couldn't believe it. My first 1700s coin and it's a big, heavy silver one!!! I'm still so excited! Here she is...

If anyone can tell my why there is a swirl on top of the crown instead of the usual cross it would be muchly appreciated.
Here's a button and a piece of a trunk plate from the same site.

Awesome find! It almost makes you fall on your ass out of sheer excitement don't they! I checked my 1798 that I found last week, just to see if there was a variance with the crown, but it's normal. I agree that it's possible someone tried to drill/punch a hole. Out of curiosity, what does the edge look like? It may help.

~ACE~ I don't know if someone tried to make a hole through it because the S shape isn't carved into it. But here's the edge.

I looked at it again and you're right... It doesn't look like an attempt to hole it. The edge design is correct too. I thought maybe if it was a counterfeit, it might explain it, but it's the 'reale' deal!

Amazing recovery - congrats! This should be a shoe in for banner if it wasn't for all of the other diggers finding multiple Spanish silver lately. It sure is the season of Spanish silver - now where is mine :dontknow:

Well, you joined the 1700's club in style! It must be very exciting to dig such a big silver coin. You didn't dislocate your shoulder when you pulled it out of the hole? :laughing7: Congrats on a truly impressive coin find!!!

Great find! The 8 Reales sure are popping these days! I wouldn't know what to say if I was to ever find one (I would probably be speechless).
