Nice find from LA. I dug 1 seated half in Virginia years ago, one in KY back in 2009, and I dug one in LA this year. That's 3 in 22 years. They are not common finds.

Cheers,

Buck

My thoughts exactly. That coin should clean up and be very brilliant silver, especially in it's condition. If it wasn't found near water, and in the ground, then it could very well be counterfeit. I have several. If after a soap and water cleaning, the coin stays either grey, or blue grey in color, then it's counterfeit. Weight should be 13.36 grams. Weigh it! Some of these well made counterfeits are VERY collectable. If you have a jewelry or postal scale tell us what the weight is. It's not that old. Silver shouldn't tarnish that bad, at 165 years old.

It also appears that there is something wrong with the "0" on the reverse. Haven't looked at the die varieties yet. But it is overly large, oblong, and very high in position. You can also see that the surface above the eagle is not smooth, but appears to be "gritty" or grainy". Just doesn't seem right.

The guy to get a hold of is...Gerry Fortin. He specializes in seated dimes but also counterfeit seated pieces. E-mail [email protected]. I've contacted him before. There are many collections and what these guys do is record, and collect, counterfeit varieties. Brian Greer and Bill Bugert also have extended collections. There are more of these out there than you may think. Yours is probably a very well made contemporary cft. That, being a cft. made around the time of issue.
