Today was our maiden outing with my new Garrett 250 and the first thing it found was what what we thought was a dirty half penny piece but when I got back and cleaned it up it turned out to be a 1604 James I unite coin. I have know idea if it's worth anything but am just excited to have found a 400 year old coin just yards from where I grew up :)

Welcome to the hobby & Tnet.

Maybe a picture will clear this one up, because there is no 1604 Unite, as they didn't produce them until 1612. If it is a gold unite, its very rare & worth about £1000.

To my knowledge, in gold, the earliest unite under James 1 was minted in 1605. The sovereign was minted in 1604.

Noticed this is your very first post - so, welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting your state for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country) and great find! Thanks for sharing...

Not according to Spink's book 'Coins of England'. Which your source quotes S.2618 & it states after 1612. But whats confusing is that a more detailed book by Jeffrey North & Spink show that the second coinage ran from 1604-19 & the Unite had 2 mintmarks the Lis & Rose;
Lis (1604-5, 1623-4)
Rose (1605-6, 1620-1)
So it looks as though it was minted in 1604,05,& 06.
The books conflict for some reason.:icon_scratch: (yet they both had Spink involved)
