Clipped 1/4 of 2 reale pistareen with a full date :0 of 1766. Also my buddy ray picked up a 1755 half reale there.
An 1815 half reale.
Flat buttons-shoe buckle fragments etc
A few bullets and an O so awesome US base 3 ringer
Very nice James, but I don't believe that your 1766 cut coin is spanish. The spanish silver coins minted between 1732 and 1772 were called milled pillar, and your buddy's 1755 half reale is one of that type. But all of these had the bottom of the date facing the outside edge of the coin, and yours is opposite from that. I don't immediately recognize it but will look into it if I get time. It's also unusual to have the entire date appear on a cut coin as the practice was to split the date down the middle. And it's even more impressive that the entire 4 digit date was left on a small 45 degree wedge (smaller than the 1/4 as you stated). Also, based on a size comparison with your 1815 half reale, I'd have to say your cut coin is from a larger denomination. Very unique and interesting find. If you can post some close-ups of both sides with good detail it would be of great help with ID'ing it.
OK - I stand corrected. I didn't realize that Spain continued to mint coins past 1732 in the pistareen style. That's probably because I haven't found any of those post-1732 variety out of the 170 colonial silver coins I've dug . The milled pillar style I was referring to were minted in Mexico, and those are the only ones I've dug in that date range. So my apologies, and thanks for setting me straight.
Here is a few more pics
It didn't even occur that it was smaller than a 1/4 cut like the one in the picture. I just set it in my curio with the other Spanish, and it's almost as if they purposely left the date on it. Kinda neat, considering I almost always dig the piece with the 17 on it lol.
We don't find a lot if clipped up by the mountains more pilar and bust types.
Good stuff James. You 1766 clipped piece is not even a quarter cut. Definitely an odd piece of pie. Like you say, they usually split the date right between the 17 and the next two numbers.
