South Carolina Button

Found this South Carolina button today, at an old farm house in Menges Mills, Pa about halfway between Gettysburg and York. I didn't think any Confederate troops came through this area. If anyone has any information on it let me know.



Also I found this Butt plate in the same yard a couple weeks ago I think it's a lot older than the button and wasn't in the same area, any information on it would be appreciated.

Great button! I saw a buttplate like that posted awhile ago and I think it was ID'd as CW era but not sure! Great finds!

WTG on the SC Button as well as the Butt Plate!

This came from the Gettysburg Times Sept 4th 1971, as you can see the Battle of Hanover was pretty close by & Stuart's Cavalry were in the area.

If you look at the Official Records into Operations in the Hanover area you may find some info: Browse | Cornell University Library Making of America Collection

You also may want to contact your local Historical Society.

Great finds there on the excellent button and musket butt plate. It almost looks like a plate from a Hawken Rifle or similar.

The butt plate appears to be from a Kentucky (Pennsylvania) Rifle. Nice find.

Thanks for the information, I was aware of the battle of Hanover but didn't know until I did a little more research that Stuart's troops moved to the east after the battle. The people that own the farm said they were told there was some fighting that happened on the hillside behind there property. So far this is the only Civil War artifact I've found on the property.

yes, very likely lost during the overall Gettysburg campaign. Though it could have been a souvenir of a Northern Soldier and lost after the war. I have seen examples of several CS items found in odd locations like an old swimming hole in New York, etc. However it was likely lost during the campaign. Real nice patina and it is a nice early type SC button circa 1840's-ish. The butt plate looks earlier. I would put it 1820's-ish. Two real nice finds for the day. I would work the site to death. Congratulations.

SC Militia button, made prior to the civil war circa 1850s. Note NY manufacturer, after the civil war started northern suppliers were cut off.

Thanks for the additional information! This old farm house has a lot of trash in the yard as usual and this was probably the third or fourth time I had been over this particular spot when I found the button. Perseverance pays-off in metal detecting!
