It's been a good while since I posted anything - been busy with other projects. But I found this piece on a recent hunt near some heavy Civil War fighting. Rob Langdon believes its what's left of a musket sling hook. I tend to agree, but wanted to see if anyone else had an opinion on it. Also, there is a green patina on it but also some rust, which I'd like to remove. It's too small for electrolysis and vinegar will likely remove the patina - any suggestions for removing the rust and/or to keep it from rusting further? Thanks!

If Rob says that's what it is Richard, I'd say it is. WTG, Q.

Yes, Rob knows his stuff, that's for sure. That's why I sent it to him first. I just can't seem to find any others like it on the internet. Many of the ones I'm seeing have the two rivets in a vertical, rather than a horizontal, alignment. Thanks Q!

Here's one that appears to be of a similar design, but it is WWI vintage:

Nice find there, pahdnah!

Have you determined anything in reference to those peculiar lead pieces?

No, I haven't. I thought I'd tackle this one first. Those will be coming soon.

I think that there is a WWII rifle sling hook that looks like that also. I think it is for an M-1. Could be an old design that was used extensively.

Yes, I found several of those online. I still think Rob is correct though, due to the area I found it in and the apparent age. Also, the actual "build" looks like CW period.
