Great Grandma's Coins

Have not been on the TNet sight to post for a long time. Nor have I been able to go metal detecting.

Long story short, we have been working at my great grandma's house cleaning and going through stuff on the weekends as she has been put in a nursing home. Sucks to get old and be physically good, but mentally out of it! 90 years old though, so that is amazing in itself.

Anyways, here are some finds. Couple of nice scores in her home and safety deposti box.

The first one, I about Dekalbed ;D (new TNet word just for Ed!) myself when I saw it! Yes, 1798 Draped Bust Dime! 209 years old! Very worn and holed, but still cool. Is it worth anything since it is so bad? You all be the judge. Never held a coin this old. It was a weird feeling, that made me think about all that has gone on, and how it survived. If only it talked! ;)

Also, some cool foreign coins, including the 1831 5 Francs (silver dollar size), and lots of Canadian silver dimes and quarters.

Oh, and about forgot, a cool 1846 Big Penny. Decent shape penny.

Anyways, thanks for looking, and any comments on condition or value is appreciated!

Re: Great Grandma's Coins

Amazingly, I would say that even in that shape it is worth more than $50; maybe 3X that. It's a very infrequently seen coin.

Nice find.

Sorry to hear about your great grandma....it's tough for families to have to make those hard decisions.

Very nice piles of silver! Man, can you come throw some around my yard for me to practice on? :)

Some real beauties there! That "holed" coin almost looks like it has a metal flaw, rather than a purposely drilled hole(?)

Re: Great Grandma's Coins

Thanks all. Sucks to put anyone in a nursing home, but she was to the point that she was going to hurt herself.

Later I might try to post some pictures of the non-U.S. coins. They are so different and neat to look at. And maybe some of our Canadian and overseas members can let me know any information on them.

Thanks again

Bobby

Re: Great Grandma's Coins

Sorry to hear about your Grandma. No one should have to be put in a nursing home if it can be avoided. My Dad told me to never put him in one and if it got that bad to just shoot him like you would a gimpy horse. Told him I would never do either one of those to him.

Granny sure has been stashing a nice Cache of coins there.

Thanks for sharing those pics, hopefully I will have something like that stashed away for my childrens children to find in the future.

Re: Great Grandma's Coins

and a couple more. And I got to looking at the old U.S. coins, and the 1937 Washington Quarter looks like it might be a double die. Will post pictures of it tomorrow and see what people think.
