First Indian Head and as a bonus, it's my oldest coin yet!

Went driving around in the country looking for possible spots to hunt and came across an old cemetery that was established in 1817 and had a church on that site from 1831 to 1974. The place looked promising so I got out and did a few swings with the AT Pro. I didn't go around the grave stones, I did hit the area where it looked like the church sat.
I dug my first hole and after sticking the Profind down in there, I picked out an old nail. I decided to run the pinpointer over the dirt I had already removed from the hole and there it was...just sitting there looking at me. I picked it up and just glancing thought it was a wheatie...until I turned it over and seen what it was...1903 Indian Head cent!!! The first IH for me and hope to find many more!
There will definitely be more trips out to that cemetery!

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

I think when I find my first Indian Head cent I'm going to have it framed with the story of how and where I found it
(10 years detecting - no IH yet )

Nice one! I found my first IH in my yard last year, a 1900, and haven't dug one since. Those are really exciting to find!

Nice digs and thanks for those pictures . Even though I have dug a lot of them this summer IH pennies are one of my favorites and I get very excited whenever they pop out of the hole

That's a very nice find. Stick to the church location and avoid the cemetery as I'm told swinging in one is very bad karma.

Nice, love IH's. Found my first, a 1904, 35 years ago in my driveway in Mass. when I was 11. Just sitting in the dirt, figure we dug it up with our bikes. Started detecting this year and found my first with the MD in my driveway in NH, a 1905. Congrats and hope you hit many more.

Nice find. I love those Indian heads.

I'm also amazed at how well they seem to hold up over time underground.

What is a good method of cleaning it? Just soap and water and toothbrush?

I would avoid the toothbrush and use cooking oil , used to use olive oil but cooking oil seems more stable. Soak it then gently rub with gloved fingers , use blue gloves, nitrile here. Keep the green off fingers and from under fingernails. Leave the green on of course if you remove it then all details most likely will be gone!

Nice IHP , congrats !
