I agree with George. I think if you do too much to it you might end up hurting it. Olive oil might be the way to go with that one. Congrats on your first large cent.

Just think, when that coin was minted the US was at war with its neighbor to the North.

NICE find! Finding a classic head large cent as your first one is a score. I've found 25 large cents in the last year or so and only one, very corroded classic head. Far more draped bust large cents come out of the ground. JMHO, your coin appears to have a nice, hard green patina. If it was mine, I'd put it in some had peroxide for a few minutes and that surface crud should come right off and leave you with a nice coin with a green patina.

Has anyone else tried the hot peroxide dunk? I am nervous to do it on this coin.

Olive oil and a soft tooth brush worked for me. Only so much you can do. I found my first LC this year 1825. Very nice find congrats!

Here it is after a week in Mineral Oil. I think it has potential, and I'm liking the green patina. Should I send it out to grading&restoration??

Great looking coin. Congrats in your first LC. I'd just throw in your display case. And go dig some more HH!

Try putting it in an apple, this works on silver coins.
