This is my first post. I live in southwest Minnesota. I found this printing plate in a street tear out. It has the marking I.P.E.U in the corner Does anyone know why they would have made holes in the middle?

Thank you for all the input. The front looks to be made of copper and the back is lead. No writing on the back that I can see.

Those are definitely not bullet holes, they are far too clean. A bullet would have torn the metal as it exited and left a jagged edge. Look at the back of any signs on a country road that has been shot up and you will see the difference. Those holes look to have been drilled.

Wow what a find and a great mystery. I want to know who it is, lol. If the decade this plate was made in could be figured out, it could narrow it down. It could be a obscure bank president in a small town, it could be a pro athlete ? It sort of looks like President Ike, maybe it is the only known photo of D.B. Cooper.

I agree with those who say it was a Cancel Mark to prevent reuse

as for who it is, I don't particularly agree with anyone

Being old and associated with a union I would say it is Eugene V. Debs (a socialist from the teens and 20's).

No idea, I added some contrast, perhaps this will help.

I would fill the holes with clay and copy the image and then fool around with the print then. Cool find
