Wow! :notworthy: Beautiful, intact & appears totally undamaged! :occasion16::wav::occasion16: Hope you keep it or sell to collector rather than have it melted down as it seems top quality item! Andi
no way I'm gonna let it get melted down! I'm thinking it would be hard to sell to a collector unless we can figure out exactly what it is. So far there are good possibilities it could be any one of the suggestions I've seen.

How about an antique snuff holder? <img src="http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1044997"/>
that snuff holder looks to be similar

I first thought Mezuzah but could not find any the were suspended that way or the chatelaine either? It obviously looks to be hand tooled. Does the top or bottom have any criss cross design on it? If it does I would say a match safe. What ever it is the workmanship is very nice. What is the outdoor scene?
the outdoor scene looks like a road with mountains and trees in the background. Along the road are cabins or huts and a fence. You can see these things if you zoom in on some of the original pictures I posted.

Wow amazing find! I'd also say banner on this one. I'd rather find this than a gold coin anyday.

Thank you all for the kind words. This is my first gold and I originally didn't think it was a big deal. But I after reading all the post I am much more excited about this item.

Keith, does the chain fit around a neck or a wrist? The decoration are ornate, but not religious at all. That's why I was leaning toward the snuff holder.....By the way fantastic find!

it looks too small to fit on a wrist. I'm thinking it was attached to a something like a coat?

That is surely an awesome find.
Gotta' love the gold and the way it comes out of the ground looking so nice no matter how long it's been hidden.

Gorgeous whatever it is. Superficially, it resembles the pencil fob, the one on ebay, but that was designed so that the lid was also a pencil holder, and this lid is hinged, so it cannot be a pencil fob of that sort.

would not think it's a snuff box, either, too long and deep, and not like snuff boxes I've seen. Definitely no way it's a snuff box.

Beautiful piece, and probably from the late 19th century, it doesn't seem like it should be that hard to id. Good luck.

Did you post this on what is it? Some pretty smart folks there when it comes to figuring finds out.
Maybe connected (religious) to the synagogue but with the description and photo' I'm guessing not.
Maybe snuff or toothpick box but I think that needle box is the best guess.
Whatever it is it's a "Great Find". I voted Banner!
Looking forward to a positive I.D.

Me too. I've also noticed most of my unique finds are near something significant. Like a cliff edge, big rock, or odd hole in the ground.
