that's a brooch with what looks like an Irish/Celtic design. It could be much older than 1800's. maybe Crusader or someone will chime in with a better ID

It is a penannular kilt pin.

Originally worn by Romans as a brooch to secure cloaks, they were adopted by Scots and Irish to secure Kilts and, continue in use today.

I would have no idea as to specific age. If I were to guess I would say it was 20th century, but only because of the condition of the brass. How deep was it?

No doubt.

Could very well be older.

Lot of Scots-Irish immigrants in central Pa in the 18th and 19th century.

Lots of Scottish came to philadelphia in mid to late 1600's. .My area was loaded with them...Until us italians moved in...lol

My wife is a hair dresser/barber and states she thinks it would likely be used to hold a woman's hair in a bun as well. Just a guess, but coming from PA would tend to think it more likely Colonial than Celtic. Whatever it is ..... it's AWESOME. Congrats

George, when I shook your hand, I was really hoping some of your luck might rub off on me. I see now that your sites, research and the fact you must have made a deal with the devil :laughing7: gets you these wonderful old relics. Congrats yet again on an awesome find. Was this from your 1800's farm site you just hunted? With the Philadelphia area's worldly history, it does not surprise me to find items from any nation.
OWK and jewelerguy, you made a very good identification! When I showed it to my gf ( she is English ), she says it is the kilt pin.
