Went to a friends yard today this is the only coin that turned up, think the mosquitoes got more than V cents worth of blood! Looks like the date showing is 1903, maybe should try the ketchup cleaning method ?

Almost looks like tar, maybe hot peroxide might clean that off. Looks like a long oil bath would work?
Nice find, I think you might find some good detail under that crud.

As treble said, long oil baths could bring out more detail... although it could take months or years. I think it looks great the way it is. I've ruined many coins by over cleaning. Great finds!

Awesome find even encrusted! Nothing wrong with nickels especially those!

Hendo0601-ketchup can be used to clean nickels, it's an mild acid. Try putting a dirty modern nickel in it for a few hours or over night, but don't clean a valuable coin. The coins we pull out of the ground are not spendable a lot of times because of the crud on them. I have used lemon juice on my clad quarters you have to watch it and not leave them in too long, some of mine turned pink. Lemon juice worked great on yellow gold!
