I spent 5 hours detecting today with Dad helping for 3 hours. We finished the HW site in about 3.5 hours & spent the rest of the time on the edge of 2 neighbouring fields following the entrance route to the site.

I thought I would show you how the Roman Box Seals worked. I previously found on another site the lid to this type of base. It was used to seal important postal boxes which might have valuables in it. They would swing it open on a hinge, put the wires through, fill it with wax & close the lid (which often had nice enamelling).

Good stuff Cru. The box seal piece is really neat, never seem a recovered one before yours (intact or otherwise).

Wow ! I bet when you found that box seal you were just praying that the valuable bit was still inside ! I love the heart brooch - kind of a hip style for 1892 !!

That box seal is cool! Again a proof how well standardized roman fabrication was.

The box seal is tiny, the only thing in it was wax or lead. It acted in the same way a modern lead seal did. ie proved it wasn't tampered with or the opposite.
