What a day Todd & myself had Sunday! one site turned into 5 cellar holes.loads of 1700's relics & coins*6 coppers*3 shoe buckle frames and 2 of the most beautiful colonial buttons I have dug.the silver gilted cut out button has to be my fave designed colonial button I have found yet.the silver is stunning on it.
2 of the coppers are pretty toasted. KGII & the CT copper.
Todd did great too.his finds are to the left in group picture.he dug his 6th GW button but it's rolled up like a taco/burrito.I told him about Leonard Short and his restoration, hopefully he can send it to him and bring it back to its original glory

That is truly an amazing day Dave! There is probably a lot more left to dig too. Congrats on the beautiful buttons and the coins. The buckles are sweet too. I believe the rectangular thing with the two holes and the scalloped edges was one of these things that some believe was a saddle strap guide. It went with a bracket that mounted to the holes. They are usually the oval design, but I have found and seen them in a more rectangular shape as well.

thanks Steve! yeah I'd have to agree with you on the strap guide theory.i have dug the oval ones too only one being complete like yours in the photo above.my complete one had the pointy iron spikes protruding out back side.kinda makes ya wonder about a strap guide though.seems it would be affixed to wood rather than leather..usually the holes are round, mine is rectangular that's what had me scratchin my head.

Damn that's gotta be one of the nicest buttons I've ever seen. They really cared about their appearance back then. Now people go out in their pajamas lol. Sad. Shoe buckles are one of my favorite finds. Those are my favorite days when you find a bit of everything and I've always said finding a coin makes my day feel complete. Great hunt fellas

Dave, those things are one of the strangest things we dig. I have found about a dozen of them. They are always decorative, as are the bracket pieces. Also, the inside surface usually has chamfers around the holes, which seems strange to me. I have tried going online to see f I could find a colonial saddle with one of those things on it, but no luck. Maybe they were used on wagons? Seems like they are always one size and could only accommodate a narrow strap. Anyways, mine are not complete. I just set brackets on top of the ovals.

Terrific hunt and finds as usual Dave uh huh yeah that Jersey copper looks like the Maris 6 D with the die crack at the bottom of the Shield . Same one that I find ,, must have a min. 0f 3- 6 D's , find that same variety every year, very common , alot of those were in circulation and most seem to be buried heads ups with a porous obverse.
YES ,a very kool Jersey copper indeed ,, Congrats and nice to see you posting more stuff , more often , have a Great season :occasion14:

The New Jersey Copper is a Maris 6-D. Very common but really nice detail! Congrats on another stellar performance. Hogge
