I had very little time tonight; maybe an hour, but I hit a spot in the woods just to give it a try and see what may be hidden below.
Within about 4 minutes I got a nice signal and dug up this:

Big Bling and a Whatsit Sept. 15 2014 001.JPG

At first, I was thinking silver but as soon as I pulled it from the hole I knew it wasn't. It feels like thin stainless. Oh well; maybe next time.

It has about a 1", pointed screw coming out of the back and a backing attached by the screw. It definitely screws into something. The backing seems to be made out of some kind of wood or composite material. I'm amazed it's still intact.

I think it may be the front piece of a drawer knob/handle off of some type of furniture. That's my best guess anyway. It looks kinda' cool. It may even be old, I don't know. It was about 5 inches down. Any help on the ID is appreciated of course.

Other than that, I just found a few pennies, a dime and another busted key (not pictured); nothing old, nothing noteworthy.

Before I knew it, it was dark and I was making my way out of the woods with the help of my modified Cen-Tech Pinpointers' built in LED light. That thing actually works VERY well. I was glad to have it tonight. Since modifying it, it's actually working really great.

It gets REALLY dark when you're away from everything back in the woods this time of year. It was nice and peaceful too. I saw no one the entire time except for a Beaver, a Blue Heron and a few other birds.

But, it was really enjoyable getting out and swinging for a little while during these last, short summer days regardless of the slim pickin's.
That's it folks.

Thanks for lookin' and HH.

Looks like a nice Bridle Rosette.

Here is a link to a page with a very similar (if not the same) one:

Wow. It sure does.
Lots of people ride in the area where I found it and probably have been forever.

The only thing is, mine has a screw coming out of the back, (dead center, point outward) not a bracket. I'm also looking a bit closer and the backing is leather; not wood. It has a single screw hole dead center.

Maybe someone rigged it that way and that's why it was lost. I'll check for any marks where a bracket may have once been.
It looks almost identical though.

I'll try and get a pic of the back up later. Gotta' get to work now.

Thanks

Here's a few pics of the back:

Rosette Back Sept. 16 2014 001.JPG Rosette Back 2 001.JPG

That's it. The front and the backing look identical to the Rosette in the above link but I'll be darned if I can find a picture of one with a screw anywhere. I also see no signs of any bracket ever being connected to this thing.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right place or maybe someone modified this thing for a particular purpose.

I do know one thing; the back is WAY uglier than the front.

Thanks again for the ID.

having a screw, I don't think it's a rosette, but maybe a decorative piece for furniture or a trunk

That's what I thought initially. Maybe someone made some horse tack themed furniture or something out of actual tack. Who knows??
There's probably no way to ever really know for certain.

Whatever it is, I actually like it for some reason.
Probably because it's the only interesting thing I found on that particular hunt.

I found one next to a rodeo grounds last month, pretty much the same as yours. The screw makes me think they are furniture or maybe wagon decorations...happy hunting, Sub 8-)

The spot where I found mine could never accommodate a wagon. It's too steep and the woods are too thick.
then again, it could have traveled from anywhere to get there.
