Sunday's digs including a sweet Masonic relic

I got out for a few hours on Sunday just because I needed to get out and dig some holes. I hit a spot that I have probably been to over 30 times in the last 10 years, but I always find something there and it has produced a number of nice military related relics. There were three house sites in this pasture, each very trashy, so by slowing down and approaching from different angles, you can pick up things that you might have walked over previously. Fortunately I was able to find a beautiful Masonic suspender clip in perfect condition this time. I also got an GS eagle button, three other flat buttons, a very corroded V nickel, some other odds and ends and a whatzit. The whatzit measures 1.75 x 1.25. It is the item that is shaped like a “&” below. Someone on a Facebook forums said it was from an old Sho Nuff clamp, but I couldn’t find a picture of one of those clamps on the internet.

Steve - that site produced quite a few keepers for one that's been pounded. Obviously there's more to be found. Good luck if you go back.

Bill I will definitely be going back. This field has produced some nice military relics. Here is a picture of some of them. Since this picture I have found a CW Navy kepi button and the eagle button I found Sunday. I am certain there are privies and trash pits to be dug too. I have found pontiled bases and broken historical flasks while digging. I need to get my probe off my buddy Keith (Fort Bedford Metal Detectors). The use layer is a couple feet deep in some areas where these homes stood, so sifting would be another option here.

The Masonic suspender clip is a nice find. Good work Steve, keeping pounding that place.

Nice finds! Question. What is that in the upper left corner of pic #1 or the first post? I found something very similar on Sunday. Mine was folded in half.

Yep that is a broken harmonica reed. I'm always disappointed when I dig one because it is a nice signal and I was hoping for something better. But they are a good sign when you're finding them.

Does anyone recognize the folded piece under the harmonica reed? I know what it is, just curious if anyone else does. I will post a pic of it unfolded later.

I've seen a few suspender clips with designs before but never on with a masonic symbol. Very cool.

Great finds Steve. What is the "feathered" piece in your military finds pic? Those harmonica reeds really do give a nice tone, don't they?

That's a nice one Steve. I found one a few season's ago. It has a pat date of 1872 on it. Last yr my brother found a solid gold locket with the mason symbol engraved on it. I love masonic items.
