Corn's been cut in the Union camp. State buttons made a good day . . .

been about 6 months since I've been able to hunt the Union camp, but the corn's been cut and the turbo-tiller has leveled out the debris.

Ten minutes in and I found a nice New York cuff button with Shank and a brass belt hook. Then everything dried up. Just cut off like a spigot. Finally gave up and went to the truck for lunch.

After lunch things slowly picked up. Three ringer here, three ringer there. All dropped - this wasn't much of a battle site, but a short-term camp. Then a grape-shot turned up. Decided to try a spot across the field where I'd found some Eagle buttons in the past. No buttons there today, but on the way I found a slightly beat-up new York coat button. Ten feet away, ANOTHER New York coat. Fifteen more feet I dig another signal and though I didn't HIT the button, this New York coat came apart. It still amazes me that after 150 years, the paper between the face and the back is still intact.

The day certainly improved quickly. I found another grape, a knapsack hook, a rivet, a grommet, a few more three-ringers, a percussion cap and some melted lead.

The kicker was a Michigan cuff button - third one from this camp. Five button day - big success for 2014 in my book.
