I have been digging an older fairground property for a the last 8 years. It's an trusty standby for those days when I don't have any new permissions. It satisfies the dig urge. Used my Predator Tools Piranha for the first time. Nice digging and I think we are going to have a good relationship, ha! I didn't realize the foot pads weren't sold in pairs. I had to order another one from George today.

Older man who grew up in the area showed me a virgin area near the grandstand which has history dating to the Civil War. Worth noting for today's finds:

1957 Wheat
Older button? (I used a wooden skewer to remove a little tarnish to reveal what looks like an H and B or D)
brass buckle

Went out with my youngest daughter (11) who has been detecting for a year now. I recently graduated her to an Ace 250. I see an AT Pro for her on the horizon. Anyway, we returned to the fairgrounds and concentrated on the site where the old grandstand stood before a fire that destroyed it a few years ago. The grandstand and horse racing activities have a history around 1848. As I understand from old timers, the original grandstand was built by confederate prisoners of war. The new construction kicked up some dirt that used to be several inches deep I imagine. I went over the area and found the copper plate with 1861 and 1865. This is within ten feet of where I found the nameback button yesterday. I have no idea what it is? Anyone? He more I think about it, it looks like a knife scale.
