Ive had the xp deus for well over a month and have read the manual 10 times so today FINALLY I have my 1st site and hunt. Several hours on an 8" corn stubble field is the best I could do this early in the season. This place has been hammered by many detectorists for the last 15 years AT LEAST but as far as I know the NEWEST coin was a 1720s King George I halfpenny. Horrible hunting conditions but I needed to find some old stuff. Anyway here is the round up. 3 old paste gem cuff links. (This place produced many), an ornate cuff link, a smashed ring and several buckle fragments. Some lead musket balls and shot plus a couple lead caps. Can someone tell me what these lead caps were used for? I have many and they all have come from the super old sites.

By the way, the buckle hardware appears to be inscribed with T. PHAREL

Nice assortment of finds! I don't know what the lead caps are but I've found them before too. Looking forward to seeing what the experts have to say. Congrats!

There are 4 nails in there which I dug purposely to just check what the detector was saying. No problem telling iron from non ferrous with this machine. None.

Do the lead caps appear to have been struck with a hammer? Lead "caps" are applied to nail heads as a method of sealing the hole made in tin roofs when the sheeting is nailed to roof rafters. Many pop off when used, and many more when the sheet metal or corrugated iron roofing is removed. Since these came from an agricultural area this is a real possibility.

Don

They dont appear to have been struck by a hammer but they could have been struck by a tool similar such as a large nail set. Thats a very good explanation. Thanks

Looks like your maiden voyage with the new machine went well. After you get a few more hunts under your belt I'm sure you will be able to master the Deus and will be pulling all kinds of relics and coins from the soon-to-be-available fields. I almost went with a new Deus, but think I'm gonna go with the new F75 Ltd that is just now hitting the market. It adds a lot of enhancements to an already good machine. Good luck this season!
