I recently went under my name 1888 home and found some items but the first thing I came across was this gun.

I was wondering if anybody can help me with this. It is very rusty it could even be a toy but I am not sure. The gun looks like it was made with no trigger guard. I found some civil war era guns like it but that wouldn't make any sense being under my house. I thought about using electrolysis on it but not until I find out more about it. Thanks for looking

Defender.JPG hope this helps , found an H & R spur trigger , birds beak handle , cleaned lightly with some WD 40

does it have any value looking like that?

To collectors , not much value , to the finder , priceless !

Very cool find and part of the history of your house . Beeswax may help.

I would take it to a gun smith, they would know how and if you should clean it. If I found it, I'd clean it in distilled white vinegar.
Cool find.

Nice find. Looks like a colt 45. Maybe mid-1800s.

there are two types t could be --a spur trigger --or flip down type trigger * unless of course the triigger guard being thin just rusted away ... these types of guns (smallish 5 and 6 shot revolvers) in both 32 and 38 calibers were very very common during the later 1880 to say 1930 era

INredneck, Your revolver is a toy cap pistol and looks identical to a "Hero" model listed in the 1904 catalog of the Grey Iron toy company. It was all iron with a nickel finish, and six inches long. A little research would confirm it. Happy Hunting, Sub 8-)

I'm thinking toy as well, since it appears that the grips are rusted metal. Some closer pics would help id it, but I wouldn't clean it too much.... just lightly brush any loose flakey rust off and seal it either with wax (I like furniture wax) or a satin clear coat.
