Detected an old site along a circa 1850 stage coach road. We were at a site that was very popular as a stay over (road house, way station) on the way up to the gold country from Sacramento. This site was one of the earliest and judging by some of the relics we have found in the past, this site may have pre-dated the gold rush (1848/1849), maybe an early settler before the rush began.
I got a very deep and kind of crappy signal on the CTX3030 that decided to dig. Got down to about 8" before I could even hear it on the probe and then another 2" down, out pops a large Cent. We find lots of large cents in the area because most of our sites are pre-1864 (Flying Eagle) and every single LC we have found is trashed from the soil. We rarely ever even get to see a date, this one was crusty too but with a little tooth pick work we were able to see the date, it is an 1845. Then I get that dream signal we all know, dime at 6" so I called Ron(CA) over to listen, he had the XP Deus and I demanded he listen with my headphones and the CTX3030, we admired the signal for a few and dug it out, right at 6", out pops a dime and you could see the edges, it was silver and we're both thinking seated. I carefully cleaned it with a little water we could see the Eagle of the reverse of a bust Dime, first we thought Mexican Reale, but flipped it over and clearly saw the bust, it was an 1834 and my first Bust Dime and first California Bust coin. 5 mins later another 12-41 but this time shallow, out pops an 1841-O seated, so all 3 coins out date our state. We all know we can't date a site accurately with coins but this along with several early relics definitely tell us if it's not a pre-gold rush site, it's one of the first. We'll keep working it and see what else we can save. But not bad for a California adventure! Sorry for the long read ;-)
