The neighbor was going on and on about how during World War 1, the local soldiers would stock up on tobacco at the barn on the corner, and they would play ball in the empty lot next door, before heading overseas. Not that I didn't believe him, I just hadn't heard that story before....Then I found these...

2 big military coat buttons!!!:headbang:, and also a Boy Scout Excelsior Shoe Token!!!
001.JPG

One of the buttons is hollow on the backside, and the other the shank is now detached, thanks to my clumsy dumb ass.:BangHead: As for the token, easy to find lots of info on it, the reverse is not the coveted good luck swastika, but rather the unicorns and shield, the reverse is pretty toasted, but that is how it will stay.

I have read about other members making these finds, but they are firsts for me. Thanks for looking!:hello:

Nice finds. I have found 3 Great Seal buttons this year. They are very nice to find, aren't they?

Good for you Dave, first are always "special"

Never seen that boy scout item before, but I have managed one the the great seal buttons, even though common, like you it was a first, so it is "special" to me.

Great Finds! I found a Boyscout token from 1911 with that same design on it...does it have a tiny hole on the top? Just curious if they came like that or someone holed mine

YOU GOT HOLED!... I saw some online w/ holes.. mine doesn't, its dated July 1910, but from what I read, they were made all through the teens.

Can you read the maker mark on the back of one of the buttons?
I found 3 in a small area not that long ago made by "Steele & Johnson manufacturing company".. That allowed me to get a pretty good date on the buttons otherwise those are still made today since 1902.
After 1926 it would likely be Waterbury

There is too much crud holding the back of the button together. To get a maker mark is near impossible, I mean it is pretty toasted.

Nothing like talking to the older people for a little unwritten private historical guided tour!
