A local historical society is graciously allowing my group to MD the grounds of their farmstead, where a brief Revolutionary War encampment took place. It has been MD'd before, about 10 years ago or so, by someone who apparently had inferior technology or didn't cover the site very well.

scotk9 and I started around the farmhouse but didn't find much so we moved closer to the field. There were a lot of foil caps, but he dug an old axle cap and a clad spill, while I hit some large iron and a quarter. Our first old find was my Braided Hair large cent, which is so toasted I don't know if I'll be able to get a date. Nearby, I found a hand-stamped copper trap tag, and then a gold-plated woman's belt buckle inscribed with "WC" and a broken woman's Timex watch. Later, right before my time was up, I hit a faint, deep high tone showing 90 on my VDI, so I dug down to find a 1939 Mercury dime in decent shape.

About an hour after I left, I got a text image from scotk9. The picture appeared to be a Draped Bust LC, he determined the date to be 1802 or 04. I stopped by to see, and it turned out to be his first half cent!

UPDATE: Took the coins to work for a look under the microscope. Scott's half cent is definitely an 1804, and from what I can see on my large cent, it's 18_5 - so either 1845 or 1855.

Great saves, If the door is still open I would make sure to go back until you feel you covered it all well. They may close the door on you if you let time lapse. My dad used to tell me "strike while the iron is hot".

It was definitely a fun day. I have not been out in a few months and was really looking forward to a successful hunt. The area is rich in early american history so I figured our odds were good. Cti4sw is going back soon. I will have to hope weather holds for a few weeks. The area was very trashy so I was delighted to find my first 1/2 cent.

Yep, that's what it's all about. Getting into a place that has promise.

Nice saves!

We have open access until we feel the site is complete; this was pre-negotiated, since neither of us has time for daily hunts.

Anyone have any idea whether that buckle is modern or old?

Not positive but I'm guessing it's more modern just looking at the design and look of it

I figured, but wasn't sure. Thanks!
