I would suspect that someone tried to cut it at some point with tin snips or something similar. The scores match up and both appear to be deeper on the same end of the coin (Lincoln's head)

Is the gouge in the same place on both sides (lined up on top of each other ) ? Perhaps it was pressed in a vise or something .

Yes it is. About same depth on opposite sides of the coin. It's probably nothing but I figured id'e get some expert insight here.

A die gouge or any other mint error involving a die being damages would resulted in a raised mark, not recessed.

Thanks for the insight coinman. I have another penny I found in a roll. After looking through a 1000 pennies my eyes go crazy lol. Can you give me your thoughts on this one. Looks like it was suppose to be 1989 but part of the 8 is missing looking like a 3. Pictures are not great but maybe you can see.
