I got bored today and hit the woods behind my house. I found the 1872 semi key indian in this spot a few weeks ago.
I got a good signal. And dug the hole. I thought for sure it was a v nickel and put it in my pouch. But when I get home and get it cleaned. I realize it's an indian head. Dated 1895

It's larger than a normal indian but still the same thickness. Any thoughts on this. It is the same size of a v nickel. The last picture is it against a v nick

FWIW, i was reading the forums earlier and another member found a larger coin of its kind, like yours. somebody had mentioned extreme heat(fire) melted the metal just enough to expand, explaining the pitting and larger size, etc.

Your coin does not look to be counterfeit, for it is not worth counterfeiting a penny, especially with real copper.

It actually doesn't have any pitting. Just the normal green corrosion that I get on some of them There is actually almost a full Liberty on this one Kinda strange

Coinman123,

I did some looking around the net. And saw that counterfeit 1877 have shown up. But I agree with you. That who would want to counterfeit an 1895. Lookingn really close at it. All the features are the same size as a regular indian. Except the distance from the letters to the rim. It is a larger gap than should be

That is definitely worth looking into. Sure looks like a Indian just to big. I've found the older fat ones but nothing like that. Weird

Great find! Should be fun investigating. I actually love finding items I cannot identify just so I can post them here and find out what they are. I have yet to post anything that couldn't be identified which goes to show the knowledge our fellow T-net members have acquired over the years.

Looks like a hot peroxide bath or two and some judicious toothpicking would clean that baby up, might revel some more? Or take it first to an expert IH dealer.

Cool Indian nonetheless.
