This close to the end of the year and not knowing when the ground will completely close up. I decided to give hunting for old stuff a try today. (so maybe Vino will let me back in his good graces
)
To that end, I got out of the way and allowed the Lord to show me where to try. He picked the cornfield! (YIKES!)
I knew I was in for a long day of not much finding and probably not much in the way of a keeper but, since He picked the spot, I had a hunch, ya know?
I layered up and off I went. Since I hunted yesterday, I figured maybe an hour or two. (not much confidence huh? LOL )
So, I get there, crank up the machine and start off for my stumbling through the cornstalks. I really don't like how hard I gotta work to find stuff in cornfields but ya know, they'd done something here. Didn't disk but the stalks were all knocked flat! Still stumbled a bit but I could swing the detector more normally! That was the first sign that He'd picked the right place.
The next sign? Well, the VERY FIRST target I dug opened up like this:
I didn't care if this was a banner find or just knock out from an electrical outlet somewhere. LOL That the corn was flat and the first find looks like THIS!?!? I said a prayer, looked up and winked, I said, "Game on!" LOL

Went about my stumbling and listening and this next one sounded a bit like a pulltab. But, that's good. You see, in this cornfield, those hits usually turn out to be bullets.
Anyway:
I could see the loop so I just placed it in my fragile finds pouch, dirt and all. I'd clean later but I knew I'd already found 2 keepers! I've hunted there before and let me tell you, I have hunted for DAYS and not found a decent keeper there!
Then, there was this one:
Didn't have an idea in the field, so, in the fragile pouch and on I went.
Four hours later but it sure don't look like much, does it.
This is fairly heavy metal. I'm not sure.
Non-magnetic and it has tiny holes in the cross member.
Buckle?
Wholly toasted 1920 wheatie.
This is what one of those finds in the fragile pouch turned out to be.
Here's that first find again. Still couldn't figure much so I put it aside for toothpickin', just in case.
This was the button with the loop. I just toothpicked away and the dirt just came clean away!
I think they call this a Tombac button? I've found many of these over the years and this one
is the absolute cleanest, most complete one I've ever found. Can anyone date this by the type of
loop on the back?
Now, back to this first find. I started picking at it slowly, (just in case LOL ).
I figured it was just some sort of tag or token or some such and I'm still not
convinced otherwise. BUT....
As I picked, I noticed some letters at the edge to the right.
So, I slowed down a bit.
The back is no help yet. I'll start that later.
Then, at the bottom I saw this:
Sorry that I don't have a complete ID on this one yet but
I'm going to take my time trying to get this cleaned up.
Just in case! LOL

I had a very fine day today! Stumbling through cornstalks and all!
And as I get closer to closing out the year, I did what I set out to do.
Find some of what I got into this hobby to do. Wonderfully old stuff!
