Found at a house built in 1840. I dug this up and heard it rattling around. My imagination set in and I thought there must of been a couple quarters inside or maybe even a ring?? I tried to open it but dirt and corrosion said no. Brought it home. Couldn't get to it for a couple days and then finally it was time to open it. I took a dental pick and scored the seam where the 2 pieces close and then ran it under some water for a minute. It popped right open and then I saw what was inside. 2 stamps and 3 wheat pennies. The pennies are badly corroded but one of them is legible with a 1920 date. I think the other 2 are also from the early 20's. The stamps are George Washington 2 cents stamps. They were made 1922 - 1925!!!! So this make up compact was lost some time around then.

I don't know on that Keith ?

the one Definitely looks like it has a Hand Cancel.

I can see the stain on the other though
and I think part of the Hand cancel there also

View attachment 1114901

I think that your right about the hand cancel marks as you outlined, and the other could be staining from the other stamp or coinage with a cancelling mark underneath.

Hey guys I see this on the Banner. Can you educate this coin and relic guy on the significance of these stamps? I'm assuming they're fairly rare or valuable. I also thought I only saw one mention of Banner by a member. I'm by no means questioning the find or anything else I just have no knowledge of stamps.

Cool thanks Jeff. I knew that about the Banner it just seemed like on most you saw more people mentioning that they were nominating it. Hopefully a stamp guy can educate my as I look out at 6' snow drifts. I've run out of room to put this stuff

these areas appear to be the same size and shape 20141231_110314.jpg if the OP can make out letters in that area we could know for sure and maybe ID the post office, oval cancels aren't common.

Here's a link to the Washington series.

United States Stamp Values - 1920-1922 Commemoratives and Regular Issues - Includes the Pilgrim Tercentenary

In that condition not worth much. But then neither is a rusty glob of iron to some folks - even if it used to be a Civil War era jack knife. Just a neat find.

Yea Good Eye ! now you have me wondering if it is the container mark,
I would have to know if the container has lettering there too.

I agree Oval would be odd, But could it be the angle the picture was taken making it look oval ?

To everyone:

Thanks a lot for all the comments, likes, and nominations. It was a huge surprise to see that my post made it to the banner today. Personally I didn't think it was that cool. I know it is cool but.....wow...thanks.

shout out to keith2004 and jeff of pa the tin is indeed perfectly circular. The stamps are cancelled and are oval. I know the picture tricks the eyes a little but the oval cancellation and the tin's rings do not match up at all.

Thanks again.

I think it's great that a find like this can make it to the banner. It isn't worth thousands or even hundreds of dollars, but it was cool. It reminds us all that you never know what you might find while you're detecting.

Congrats on the banner. 1922 no D or weak D wheat cents are worth a little money. You might want to check those closely since you're in the right era. Not going to be worth the full amount in that condition, but it would be cool to find one.

I do still need to get years off 2 of the pennies. I could only read the one which was 1920.

Congrats! :occasion16::wav::occasion16:

My only "cache" so far was in a park under a bush - a surface find of plastic Easter egg with a quarter & a couple smaller coins in it - found it many months after that community Easter egg hunt was over, lol. Andi
