Hey y'all. Went out with vmiairpwr07 today around Charleston, SC and hit up a couple sites. We ended up finding this cannonball and parrott shell base on the surface. Found the coin at a second site. Any advice on cleaning a cannonball? Kindof afraid to mess with it. Are there services that can determine if it has a fuse or not? Appears to be a 6 pounder but a lot of it may just be corrosion. I'll try to get some better pics of the coin. Its soaking in oil now.

Thanks!

Congrats on some nice relics and coin. My advice to you would be to wash the oil off very well with dish soap and then soak it for about 20 minutes in lemon juice. This will remove a lot of the built up tarnish and caked on crud. Might need to soak it a couple times to get it like you want it.

Great finds. Yank that coin out and wash out off with Dawn dish soap. It's the best at neutralizing and cleaning oil. You learn that when you work by the ocean sometimes. All of the wharf owners have huge containers of Dawn in case of an oil leak. Anyway put that baby in lemon juice. You can prob use a super soft toothbrush on it after it soaks. Lemon juice does a great job on silvers. Don't leave it too long or it will become too shiny. You can keep checking it to try to keep that nice dark toning. Good luck

Nice finds. Congrats. I found a solid shot cannonball that cleaned up very nicely using electrolysis. Congrats again and HH

Here's the half dime all cleaned up. Might have let it soak a little too long in the lemon juice. Looks great to me though. Happy hunting!

The half dime came out pretty good considering the amount of crap on her.

Congrats on the ball, as far as cleaning it up I have no input on that one as I'm no fan of things that can go boom.

Big improvement on the half dime. I don't think you soaked it too long but I wouldn't be surprised if that coin wasn't in a fire exposed to some extreme heat. Not much more you can do to improve it. Just enjoy it and get out there and dig another!
