Found a first today, a snake buckle.

According to this Website it is a Romano British hooked strap end (snakebuckles)

Can someone please date it for me?

Crusader I see you have one exactly the same.

They are used to join a belt or sword belt.

Some Websites are saying Roman, others Medieval.

It is actually a bird-like serpent not a snake. Others are snakes and even ducks.

Sorry, but Colchester are wrong on this one. The first examples started in the 16th C, & this one does look to be one of those earliest types. I never get bored of finding these, many different variants over the hundreds of years they were used. They still have a current version on the No.1 Navy Uniforms.

Thanks, I noticed you found quite a few yourself.

on one Website they said it was Roman (Trowbridge Metal Detecting Club-September 10 Find Month)
on another the PAS they said 18C (https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/471947)

if it is 16th C thats great.

I can't be 100% sure, there is no definitive science to these. ie. no one has published the evolution of the various forms & when they date to. I'm using best judgement in the same way many others do, including the PAS. What is certain is they begin in the 16th C & no earlier.

Nice find. Here in the states they where used allot by the C.S. armies, and some where also used by the North, of course most where British imports.Would probably be tough to find a variant of one that early here. They are around, but I Haven't found one yet.
