I found this recently in a local farm field here in Southeastern Virginia. It's the second piece of cut Spanish silver I've found there in the last couple months. I believe it to be a Charles III 8 Reales, dating somewhere between 1772—1788.

The edge looks fine to me. There are a variety of edges, corded several types, with a design of laurel leaves, milled, double milled, diagonally-milled, herringbone, with incuse lettering, etc.

Really cool piece. Sure looks broken and not cut to me. I love it regardless of it's real or counterfeit. In fact I prob love it more if it's counterfeit

Initially, I thought the brittle looking break might be an indicator of a counterfeit. But after using the corded edge design on the milled pillar 8 reales minted between 1732 and 1772, the new bust or portrait style 8 reales began including an edge design consisting of alternating circles and rectangles, and yours definitely includes that feature. And I don't see any silver plating starting to flake off either which also increases the likelihood of it being the real deal. Below is a similar coin I dug a couple years ago that was definitely a counterfeit based on the smooth outside edge, flaking, and pot metal center. Yours is nothing like this one. Great find!

Nice find whether real or counterfeit. The edge does look jagged. Genuine cut Spanish typically has a smooth straight edge unless it is a rough field cut piece. Here are some of mine including a halved 8 reale.

I think it looks real, but the broken edge made me wonder. I'm still at a loss to try and explain how that might of come about, but one think for sure is its not a cut up piece for change.

A non silver, or very low grade silver, is way more likely to break that way... so only a surprise if it's a genuine coin which I don't think it is.

Yeah, I hear ya.

It does look silver & not plated, so if a counterfiet it's a very debased one. Not heard of too many of them.
