Well here is the story. Randall and I where doing our first hunt together this weekend, and Randall hat some places to hunt. So we met up at the Waffle house at 7.00 and hit the forrest. After about 1 hour I got a good signal in a snake hole. I dug it and this beautifully silver coin from France came up. I have just washed it but it looks like it might be a really good one.

1. What is a coin like this doing 6 in. down in the forrest ?
2. Looks like the coin could be the following

5 Francs CHARLES X 2ème type Tranche relief

Graveur : Auguste François Michaut
Frappée en 1830
37 mm - 25 g - Argent
Tranche en relief DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM
4 003 exemplaires. ( should be 4003 made of this coin a low number I believe)

Here is my bad pictures for now I believe Randall will post also from the trip today.

My coin is a 1830 T ( I believe the T is the mint mark but not sure) I have not found a picture where the mint mark is a T so I am not sure I have enclosed a stock photo where the mint mark is different than mine but also from 1830. Anybody that know about this coin please post.

Congrats, I work in Atlanta for the fire dept. Not many large wooded areas left there.

Congrats. Don't know much about french coins, but it looks go to me. I was going to say you must have traveled a ways away from Atlanta proper, but GaElvis beat me to it. I recently found some modern Canadian coins here in Athens, so I guess Georgians have always traveled a lot.

We had a great time today. The coin is in great shape, just beautiful. We actually were in Smyrna, not Atlanta proper, where there are still some wooded areas left, though they are vanishing fast!! This is a pic of the area we hunted and where the coin was found...

Re: Old Silver Coin 1830 found in Atlanta Forrest oh did I mention its from France ?

Well I am looking into this coin a little bit and it looks like that my guy on the coin Charles X lost his job on 17 of August 1830 after a revolution in Paris. On 30 of July 1830 a new king Louis-Philippe took office. So now am looking for my coin with the mint mark T it does not look like any I can find on the internet.

Here is a famous picture from the revolution where my guy lost his job.

Anybody knows where the mint with the T is from in France ?

Re: Old Silver Coin 1830 found in Atlanta Forrest oh did I mention its from France ?

OK I got a little more in my reseach I now believe the Mint was in Nantes.

http://www.monnaies-rares.com/MR-france-XIXeme.htm#charlesX

5 F Charles X 2ème type 1829 T Nantes

So now I am down to find out the following, this is a free translation from french, so I hope its close.

CHARLES X (1824-1830) 5 Francs 1830 PARIS. Slice in relief. Assez rare and satisfactory specimen q.TTB/TTB This type with the inscription on section struck in relief was emitted only in 1830, before "the 3 glorious ones" of July, and only in the workshop of Paris.

From this it could mean that only coins with a mint mark of A ( Paris ) can be this type but I am not sure. Also the letters on front and back of the coin is raised but I am not sure if that is what Relief means ?

Well I am sure tomorrow when I wake up somebody here has found it and will post it.

Thanks for looking.

It's about $1.25-$1.30 to 1 Euro. That is quite some coin.
