Good ole mansion!

UPDATE ON SHIELD NICKEL







SEE BELOW.


For those who've been following along, you know this is my happy place. Today, I felt like recharging
so I went for a bit of a walk around the mansion again. When I go here it's more than finding things that
I'm hoping for, I'm trying to get myself "centered" again.

I've been here for so long it pretty much is a relic hunt. It will never run out of those!




The big chain like thing I don't know, the center looks like a fence rail holder the spike thing looks
like a chisel or maybe a wood splitter.



The yellow thing is a piece of a Tootsietoy,
The thing on the top right is a knob of a radio or something.
The folded piece is lead.



Another folded up piece of lead, a key, and the shotgun shell
says "Western Field" I think.



Although I was finding what I expected, the mansion saw
that I wasn't as happy as I might be.So, it gave up this one.
Good ole mansion!!




It even gave me a passport back in the house!



Those who have been fortunate enough to find these knows, this is a lot of detail showing thru.
I want to take my time in trying to clean it up. (Open to suggestion).

This nickel is something special. I have found several over the years and they
simply don't come out looking as good as this one does. I'm just hoping I can get some more
of it's pretty detail to show once more. One of the prettiest designs, IMHO.

Your knob to radio I think is a cap to a red wagon wheel. So maybe instead of radio knob It was Radio Flyer cap.

Nah. I had one of those. This is a solid brass knob, threaded small hole with ridges in the knob for gripping. It's a radio knob. Possibly from something like a communications equipment of the army. (Right color).

I would say you had a nice spin WIF!! Love the coin!..See I don't even know what it is,
shielded something I would guess. Us water hunters only know one thing....

Yeah, well, there are different types of detectorists. Some are what is known as traditional "treasure" hunters.
They only know one thing that gives them joy. Profit. If it ain't intrinsically valuable, it's worthless. Those sort of hunters
aren't happy hunters when there is no gold/silver/etc.

Then there are relic hunters. One's who truly enjoy seeing the past come alive through the items they recover. Even if
they can't put it up on Eboob and make some money with it.

Then there are some who mainly search for a certain type of find. Like rings, coins, tokens, etc. They're pretty much happy
finding any of them but they concentrate on one aspect because that's what makes them happiest.

I've been doing this off and on for a very long time. I pretty much do all types. I've even
left the detector at home and gone bottle digging. It just depends on the mood. Overall,
I think of myself as a coinshooter. That's why I got a detector in the first place and I still
love to turn an old coin in good shape. It'll never make me rich. (even the most rare coins won't
because I probably wouldn't sell them ) I liked how I could find coins in the water but,
when I saw what it did to them, even a good coin made me sort of sad.

Anyhoo, good luck and I'm waiting for that report you promised.

The way some seem to be responding to the reins guide, I guess that's considered a good find for relic hunters then?

The " chain thing " is some type of swivel, so whatever you hang can be turned. Butchers used them. They use them for punching bags. A dog tether has one with a snap. If the " chisel thing " comes to a point, it might be a center punch.

Must've been a BIG dog! LOL The swivel part of this is over 3 inches across! The chisel thing has a fairly sharp edge to it but it's a broad edge, like a chisel. It's 7 inches long and fairly heavy. I don't know much about log splitting equipment, but that's what I was thinking. It was over a foot deep. (I was curious. LOL )

The side of the nickel with the date was just too far gone.



This is as good as I can get a picture of where the date would be.
It's a shame because you can see the ridges in the pillars. Just too much
damage around the date.



Near as I can make out the last number is either an eight, three or zero.
Since they're only made a few years we can come close to guessing but
that's about it.



It's not all bad news though. I found it. This side is fairly decent.
And, it's still a nice example of a dug Shield Nickel. Pretty few
and far between.

I found one before and it came out of the ground looking great. By the time I got home it dried up or something and most of the detail looked like it dried up a flaked off or something. Still can make it out now and a rare find up here in Nova Scotia. [emoji2]
