Hello Folks,

So we made our 4 hour trip this last weekend deep into Nevada. We stayed near an old mining town in Nevada where we have been in the past and with 6 of us detecting and digging; knew it could be great.......My buddies father in law has had good luck metal detecting for gold on the other side of the mountains.

Day 1 was slow with the normal finds of buttons, broken bottles and Chinese coins.

Day 2 is when my son again started out finding the silver first and talking trash. A holed 1847 "50 cent" French coin. Then on top the ground he gets an 1856 Seated Quarter. He was feeling good about himself and it was starting to look like the other 5 of us were going to get skunked.

Day 3 is when my buddy and his father in law found their 1867 and 1868 Shield Nickels. By buddies son found an old pistol (sorry no picture yet) and I found a couple more buttons and a brass WP RR Key as well as an old brass spur in great shape.

Day 4, we decided to head further up the canyon and give it 4 hours before leaving for home. We were near an old park area and my buddy decided to walk around an old road. About an hour later he is walking towards the truck; shaking; asking me if I brought the bottle whiskey???? I asked him if he found gold and he just smiled.......We all walk over to the edge of the road he was working and see the "large" disk on his shovel. He is shaking so bad he can't even pick it up. After some personal photos and a bottle of water (and having a beer), he cleans it off. We all see a find of a lifetime. An 1862-S double eagle. Might have hit it with his shovel or the rocks it was lying on under the dirt.

Enjoy the pictures. (I added the US Cartridge Plate because it had been found on our prior trip. Thought it was odd to be found so far out west but with the amount of cavalry finds we have made, you just never know what you may get.)

Thanks for looking.

We stay at a B@B at the location. The family that owns the B@B have 150 acres of the old town site which extends 2.5 miles in the canyon. They have allowed us to metal detect their property for the past 4 years when we make our trips. This last trip we met some other residence in the area who have given us new locations to try out next time we go out. The outside of town is surrounded by BLM land. Anything we find on the owners property we show them and offer them first dibs on what we have found. Over the years I have given the owners a few of the coins. (Seated dime, Indian penny and Chinese coins). They have a nice collection of items from what they have found just walking on the property. The double eagle was on the side of an older roadway near an old park which probably got pushed around from the roadway based on some of the marks on it. The owners residence was built around 1868 and he asked if would check the area around the house next time we come. Of course we said yes, but I told him he would do the digging cause I didn't want to dig holes in his grass!!!!! Unfortunately some of the ground was "placer mind" in the teens after the town was more or less abandoned which included an old store, Wells Fargo land office and some if its business district. I can only imagine whats buried under that dirt.

It was amazing to see the items the owners have found on the ground. When you walk around the house, it's like walking in a museum. These I had to take a photo of and share.
