Found this today in Northumberland Virginia around a house site that dated from the 1820s to the 1890s - have found lot of good 19th c relics around this site before, haven't hunted it in almost 3 years though.

I do know this hat pin is earlier than 1912 because the VMI hat pins produced after 1912 had a clip pin attached to the back- this does not. If anyone knows please chime in... ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1431214993.468064.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1431215018.932553.jpg

Here is one posted on TreasureNet http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/74922-old-hat-shield.html this is the 1912 year + because of the pin on the back... Mine does not have pin so it has to be earlier.. perhaps 1880s-1890s?

Hey Hut, cant seem to leave your relic photo alone that is just one rare find to me. Would love to clean a find like that it up and put it in a show case.vanzutphen
