The rain came last night in buckets. The ground in the area of this site had been reduced to dust for weeks, and I had been awaiting a good soaking. Everything at this site that's old starts at 7" so the dry ground made for a tough time.I had to go today!!!

After arriving I quickly plucked a 1892 Indian Head and a early buffalo. Soon after that a very nice eagle button. After that I spent about an hour searching. In a spot I had definitely been over, I had a tone. It was soft and mild, a tone you may associate with something other than a coin. But, the tone was steady and true, reading at 12-46 on my CTX. I dig down and nothing. Rescan, and now it's a nice sharp tone - the kind we like;) still 12-46. I dig a little more, gently, thinking it's an old silver quarter. Pinpoint, get some beeps...brush away the dirt and boom! 1828 large cent! I'm so relieved since it's the first older coin I've found here. I scanned the area after that and with no luck move on.

About 20 minutes later I get a nice crisp tone, but weak, by a rock about 6-7" down. Read 12-41 steady. I'm thinking a Wheatie perhaps since most of the 6" signals were newer. Pull the plug and it's right there. Petite and thin. I immediately knew it was silver and snapped a pic. Good thing I did...because it made for a beautiful in-situ shot of a 1772 Half Real! I pick it up and saw the pillars...yes!!!!!!! Then I see a 72. Woohoo!

What a day, what an ending to my day. It also was the first day that produced old goodies on a site dating back to 1675-1690's.

Happy hunting and stick with it! Great job on the silver Scrappy. That must be a very popular date as the last 2 silvers I dug last month were both 1772 half reales. Very strange .....

Thanks Bill. I dunno why so many that have been found were '72's. I daydreamed today that few chests of coinage left Mexico City, traveled by ship to Virginia, Philly, NY, Boston and Portland.

Those are some nice saves!!!! We find very little old Spanish style coins up and out our way, unless were working the old trails. I think between my partner and I we have only three; 2 Real's. And those were all found withing about a 20 foot area.......

youll get there. I remember finding an 1802 draped bust LC and missing it. But then I found one from the 1700's. Then I found a 1600's. You'll get there.

The way it was explained to me is distilled water is starving for minerals so it pulls out the minerals encrusted on the coin. It's also lacks minerals assuring nothing in the water will react with the crusty crap on the coin.
