Nice find. A few facts on Shield Nickels, They were first authorized by an act of Congress May 16th 1866 and it was Designed by James Longacre Chief Engraver. The US Mint was forced to make it with three parts copper and one part Nickel because Silver was scarce after the end of the Civil War which ended in 1865 with the Assassination of President Lincoln On April 15 and the Final Surrender of the Remaining Confederate Troops and Capture of Jefferson Davis in Georgia on May 10 1865. In the years from 1866-67 the design had rays between the stars and in 1867-83 No rays. In 1882 there were 11,476,600 minted in Philadelphia.

I know very little about coins but it sure is interesting to look at and in beautiful condition.? I take it, those are difficult to come by.? ?Good job.
Funny thing, I'v had 2 friends find them & both were in great condition. They Must Be made Better then the Later ones, or deep enough to avoid the Eliments
