I just returned from a business trip near Trier Germany, close to the French border.? This area is one of the largest Celtic regions in Germany, then the Romans conquered and so on.? I usually hunt after work but they have 4-6? of snow and it?s frozen hard, I checked several areas.? So I explored a nearby castle, Frauenburg, that was built in 1330 along with a town below the castle.

This monument marks the site where the town once stood below the castle, my best translation:? ?Here once stood the town of the valley Frauenberg.? It was built along with the castle Frauenburg shortly before 1330 and was completed in 1332.? On 29 June 1761, the town was destroyed by a flood and not rebuilt.? The towns people rebuilt on higher and safer ground two towns, Sonnenberg and New Frauenberg.?? I think anywhere along the stream and fields below this point will probably yield some nice finds.? I need to find out if it was a flash flood that destroyed the town or was it a gradual flood that slowly ripped it apart.? Probably a flash flood!

I climbed up the highest tower and had an impressive view of the valley below.

I noticed the hill on the right may have been an excellent place for a watch/guard tower that would give a 180 degree view of the valley that slightly bends.

So the next day I planned on scaling the side of that beast but was lucky to find a path.? It?s very possible the path is as old as the castle.? Even talked a work colleague into going with me.

When I arrived at the top I immediately found three points that would be perfect to place a guard tower allowing a 180 degree view of the valley, it?s a long way down so I didn?t get any closer to the edge!? This is to the left of the valley, I could see about 3 kilometers or more of the valley and a full view of the small river, had to be a watch tower here!? But what could be found here?? Spear and arrow tips?? Sword, a dagger?? Medieval bottle caps?

View of the castle Frauenburg from the hill top.

Another view of the hill, the closest point is where I took the picture of the valley from.? I hope to get another business trip here when it?s thawed out, nice having expenses paid!? I can?t detect the castle but the areas around it like the watch tower positions and fields below can be detected.? Hope you enjoyed this bit about exploration and research, I?m snowed in and have nothing else to post, LOL!? Had a great time exploring!? HH, Mike

Great picks ! My wife and I went there last summer and wondered what that sign said. It is a great castle but those steps inside will wear you out .

MAN! Those are some really nice photos you took!

I've been to Germany twice as a kid. Haven't been back there for 28 years or so :( Looks damm cold to me :)

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself and made the best of a cold trip. Hopefully you can get another "expenses paid" trip out of your job and get back there when it's a bit warmer :)

If you do make it back, make sure you post whatever you find. That is some real history your exploring there! Should be some really great finds laying in wait for you.
