Hi everyone,

The other day our Treasure Hunters went back to were we found the Revolutionary War era bayonet. One of the guys found this very old pocket knife between 6-8" deep on a flat near the stream. After a quick google search, it looks like a style that was popular between 1750 and 1850, which could mean that it is contemporary with the bayonet. It measures 12 cm long. If anyone has any thoughts as to its origin or age, we would appreciate your comments! IMG_1108.JPG IMG_1110.JPG

Thanks ARRC, we're hoping the rain moves out so we can get out this afternoon. If not, we'll be off to visit the local historical society to do some research.

I WISH I had this "class" or school when I was younger... too friggin cool.

Research is the key...
I am sure if this gets organized you could petition/request permissions everywhere for these young scholars.

What a fantastic class. And I absolutely love the historical stuff you find. I bet these kids are going to be great detectives and history buffs. You must have a local metal detectorist come visit and give a class, If you got some good ones.......Congrats on the great idea. and the finds!

That is a Rev War era clasp knife. Another super find. And the soil seems to be pretty kind to those iron/steel artifacts. It's starting to look like there may be a camp in that that area.

Steve, thanks for the info on the knife. Hopefully this is a camp location. It would be pretty neat to find a button to help us identify which regiment might have been camped here.

Thanks, Chris. We've got roughly 100 acres. We've only scouted a little bit of that area.

Kindle with the condition the knife is in I would soak it in pb blaster penetrating oil. I wouldn't doubt that you could not get the blade to open after the soaking and its not in the shape you think it would be after all the years lying and waiting to see the sunshine again, man that is a nice piece of colonial history you must be in a hot spot vanzutphen

Steve is correct about your knife being Rev War era. I found a nearly identical example (item #23) in my reference book "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" by Neumann & Kravic (see pic below). The one in the book has a bone handle, and I can tell from your pic that a similar handle existed on yours at one time, and in the exact same position. This should be further dating confirmation on your outstanding find. You can click on the thumbnail to enlarge to see the details better.

That's another incredible find!
I really believe, like Steve said that could be a Rev War camp site..
We really appreciate you sharing your finds with us. And I can't wait to see what else you guys pull out..
One thing though, there is alot of guys out there that do not have the Morals and ethics that most of us here on this site do..
So please do not disclose any site information, or location.
I have seen and heard of people coming at night, and raiding sites..
Just wanting to bring this to your attention.

Thanks, George. Luckily, we are a year round school, and because it is also a working farm, there is almost always someone there to keep an eye on the place. The land is posted as well.
