Short Weekend Hunt ...1899 Barber Quarter

I returned to the place where I found the old Navy button (not the store, see topic http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,87274.0.html) for about an hour Sunday morning. The mosquitoes were unbearable, so I had to give up rather than risk a case of West Nile Encephalitis. It is probably my last woodland hunt until November, when the tics, the mosquitoes, and the poison ivy all die down.

The coin was about 7 inches deep and was bouncing between penny and dime on my ACE, even when it was in the dirt pile. It still has some good detail, although I may have stabbed it. CURSES!! My old White's Bullseye pinpointer died and my new Vibra Probe 560 should arrive in a few days.

Great Find!, I think the Back of the Barber coin is the best looking coin the US ever made.

As for the ACE jumping around, it does that when you get a good deep silver signal. You might try turning down your sensitivity some and that will help. You will still get those deep coins. Good Luck and I'd go back to that site early in November.

I tried to hunt a site last week deep in the woods. Don't know what was worse the bites of the buzzing of hundreds of tiny wings in my ears.

But at least they let you escape with one nice coin.

I bought it New on ebay for $65. When it broke I sent it out to White's, and they sent me a new one...Same thing happened again to the switch. Sent it out again, got ANOTHER New one. IMy ebay auction ended last night...Final selling price, $94.!! Bought the VP560 for $99!

Nice coin. Sounds like you came out all right on the pinpointer too, except for the hassle. As for the mosquito's, this sounds silly but I tried it last year fishing and it works amazingly well. Pin a new dryer sheet on each shoulder of your shirt and on your shorts if you are not wearing long pants. I have no idea why it works but it does. I haven't had a problem with them since. I just was looking at last years finds. The last Barber quarter I found(1912) was on May 14th, 2006 EXACTLY ONE YEAR AGO from this years 1899!!!
