Another "after the rain" dig and another successful backyard dig. Lots of nails as always and a nice surprise. I believe it's sterling and it's a monogrammed wax seal stamp. I can't find any markings on it.

I also found something that looks like a fuse but I know it could be anything. Any thoughts?

IMG_3459.jpg IMG_3460.jpg IMG_3461.jpg

I unearthed my third finial-- all exactly the same. When I found my first one, members said it was a finial from a cap pouch but I'm starting to wonder. Since I've found 3, I'm wondering if they're actually something else.

These other pieces are a mystery to me- one is either copper or brass. It's open at one end and closed at the other. It's about the size of a long cigarette butt and has banding around it. It looks like there was embossing on it but I can't make it out. Another piece looks like a bullet/shot gun casing and finally the small iron piece looks like the end of a knife but again, could be anything. Oh yes, and another bone to add to the graveyard collection.

If no other color... try the cream...
Then photo with a light pointed directly from the side... "across" it.
So to create shadows in the crevices to bring out some detail...
Take pic with flash off.
So the wax impression was a disaster. The wax was so old that is was highly flammable. It caught the paper and my finger on fire. Luckily I found a wax crayon that worked perfectly. The only problem, the monogram is so worn that the details are lost.

I do agree with OWK that it is a "B". The interesting thing is that in 1890, the DC recorder of deeds was Blanche K. Bruce. He was the first former slave to complete a first US Senate term and the signer of the deed to my property in 1890. Wouldn't it be great if the seal was his!!???? I'm sure it's not but it's nice to think about.

Crayon is never as good as candle wax... it is too thick for "detail"s like this.

Caught on fire ?

hmmm wow. ;/ ? ? ?

Did what I could... good luck ... and good find.

No need to use messy wax, Silly Putty has worked great for me for years, and it is reusable over and over again. Nice finds!

Perhaps you are unaware of the fact that a signet is a seal.

DCMetal,

Did you happen to notice if there are any markings on the signet, other than the engraved script?

I know we're not supposed to covet thy neighbor's goods, but I have a bad case of 'covet' for that seal.
Nice going, D.C.

Sorry, just saw this post. No I didn't see any other markings but since you asked-- I'm going to look with a loop.
