1715 homestead yields period relics! Late 1600's spoon!

These pictures represent 8.5 hours of detecting bliss on a new site. The property originally had a small cape built in 1715, and then a huge Colonial was attached to it by 1792. A great day out and some fantastic finds! ·

I found the cut half penny first, it was a faint signal and I ended up recovering it close to 12 inches!! I was stoked when later in the day I found a complete KGII with a readable date 1734!!! The picture doesn't show it as well as in person.

Another thrill was the 3 IH coin spill. Recover, scan and repeat, I was so excited!

I found the two lead figures within 3 feet of each other. Does anyone have an idea on the date they may have been made? I am thinking the soldier may actually be an English Sailor?

I always love finding cuff links, I forgot to take some pics of the back to help identify when they were made. They have a shank built into each one with an "S" clasp connecting them.

Does anyone have an idea on the large pewter spoon with the circular stamp in the bowl? Age??

****UPDATE VERY COOL**** I did some searching around TNET and found some ID's that I think match up. The "touch mark" is referenced in the two links below, so I'm pretty sure this spoon may date to the late 1600's!!!!

I also was pumped to find the shield horse harness accoutrement. I see them posted here and wanted to find one for myself. Are they always military in nature or could this have been civilian? Date range on it? What about the large one? What was it's purpose?

got a proper ID on the shield decoration. It's called a "harness boss" and was affixed to the end of leather straps on horse harnesses. Was used from the late 1790's through to the civil war.

First I have a question. Is the "pewter" spoon your showing in the 2nd pic at the top the same spoon as shown by itself further down? The reason I ask is the first pic shows the spoon to have a bent handle while the other one is straight. And the first one looks like the end of the bowl may have been broken off, but the other looks like a very irregularly shaped fig-type bowl.

With that said, the 2nd one is of the plain, or Puritan, design. These were made of latten (a copper/zinc/iron alloy) or pewter. Yours appears to be a latten spoon which were more common, and it dates to around the mid-1600s. The "touch" on the bowl seems to be some variation of the popular "3 spoons" mark, and I can't tell which one from your pic. Some had the maker's initials on either side of the 3 spoons, and others had "double whited" stamped around the periphery of the spoons. I'm providing a link below to an online copy of "Old Base Metal Spoons" by Price which is the best early spoon reference I've come across. Just click on the gear symbol in the upper right and download the pdf. You can browse through it and maybe come up with a mark that matches. But in case you didn't know, the early records for English spoon makers were destroyed many years ago in a fire, so there's no way to attribute initials to a maker's name and/or date. Cool, thanks for the link. I have attached the pictures to this response, they are of the same spoon. The bowl is bent more than it would have been, also the bowl, top left side of it looks very worn down. (rather than broken). So even if the bowl wasn't bent upwards, it would still look irregular as it looks like one side is worn down from use. Also the handle is bent. It is just an optical thing taking a 2d picture of a 3d item.

You have hit a great centuries occupied site! What fun! I had the blessing of a similar site and every hunt was exciting. You could turn up anything, and you have already turned up treasures from the past.
Lots of good stuff, I'm with Tom, very hard to choose favorites, the pewter spoon is fantastic, the lead soldier and horse is great, nice spread of coins, although I wonder, who would cut a half cent? lol

The property is on a little over 5 acres. There's a barn and stable area I haven't touched yet, as well has a huge side/frontish yard area that is all grass now, but was woods for most of the last 75 years. Also another 2 acres or so of over grown woods. Supposed to be a trash/bottle dump somewhere out there. I spent 5.5 hours there on Sunday with a lot of success as well. Will post pics soon. Plan on going on Friday for a period of time as well.

Great early stuff! As Bill said the "3 spoon" mark was the most common used and there's a ton of variations of that mark. But that a very nice early example.
